Using Installer

  1. Download FFmpeg_install(beta installer, for OS X 10.4 or later)
  2. Double click the file to extract, then double click the installer
  3. Enter your admin password and hit enter to install

Note: The installer will be working, but the progress bar will not fill as it works. crop_all.command will be placed on your desktop, save it to use for batch conversion. For this installer to work your computer must be connected to the internet and allowed download access from If FFmpeg fails to install, you can try the Installation (by hand) below. Once finished, there won't be a listing for ffmpeg under Applications, as it is a command-line only tool.

By Hand

  1. Go to
  2. Select and download the appropriate version of ffmpeg (Leopard vs Snow Leopard and above)
  3. Open a Terminal window, you can use the finder to launch Terminal
  4. Copy and paste each of the following into Terminal, hitting enter after each command. Enter password when prompted.
  • cd ~/downloads
  • unzip *Leopard_*; rm *Leopard_*.zip
  • sudo mv ffmpeg /usr/bin
  • sudo chown root:wheel /usr/bin/ffmpeg
  • sudo chmod 755 /usr/bin/ffmpeg
  • cd ~/Desktop
  • cURL -O
  • chmod +x crop_all.command
